Ophthalmology

Eye diseases and injuries in horses deserve special attention at all times. Recurring complaints should be thoroughly investigated, as even mild initial symptoms can quickly worsen and impair your horse’s vision – in the worst case, there is a risk of losing the eye.

We offer in-depth diagnostics, which, in addition to the clinical ophthalmoscopic examination of the anterior and posterior segments of the eye, may include sampling and histopathological examination, as well as ultrasound.

If the posterior segment cannot be visualised due to pupil constriction or corneal or lens opacity, ultrasound still allows assessment of this region. Foreign bodies, injuries, or masses in the area of the bony orbit can also be visualised with the help of ultrasound.

In addition to diagnostics, our range includes both conservative and surgical treatment of ophthalmic conditions, depending on disease severity.

Conservative therapy focuses on the treatment of corneal injuries or corneal defects. In cases of infected corneal injuries, intensive topical antibiotic therapy (initially every 2 hours) is necessary to prevent rupture into the anterior chamber of the eye and subsequent loss of the eye. In severely painful or uncooperative patients, medications can also be administered via a subpalpebral lavage catheter inserted through the upper eyelid. We also offer conservative treatment for immune-mediated keratitis, episodic ocular inflammation, and glaucoma.
