TSE

Tumour-Specific Electroporation (TSE) - Modern cancer therapy in horses

Equine sarcoids and other skin tumours present a particular challenge in equine medicine. They may show aggressive local growth, are prone to recurrence, and can be challenging to treat. Tumour-Specific Electroporation (TSE) is an innovative therapeutic approach that offers a targeted and tissue-sparing treatment option.

What is TSE?

The TSE combines targeted electrical impulses with locally applied Low-dose chemotherapy. The electrical impulses temporarily open he cell membranes of tumour cells („electroporation“), allowing the medication to enter the tumour cells directly and highly effectively. Surrounding healthy tissue is largely preserved.

Advantages of TSE therapy

  • Targeted effect: The medication acts directly within the tumour cells.
  • Gentle on the organism: Only small amounts of active substances are required, minimising side effects.
  • High effectiveness: A significant reduction in the recurrence rates has been observed, particularly in equine sarcoids.
  • Minimally invasive: The procedure usually only requires sedation and local measures rather than extensive surgery.
  • Short healing time: Reduced tissue trauma leads to faster recovery.

Areas of application

TSE therapy is particularly suitable for:

  • Equine sarcoids at various localisations
  • Other equine skin tumours, e.g. squamous cell carcinoma
  • Recurrent tumours following surgical removal, where prevention of regrowth is desired

Treatment Procedure

Following light sedation, the medication is injected directly into the tumour. Special electrodes are then used to deliver short electrical impulses to the tissue. The procedure takes only a few minutes and is painless for the horse. Depending on the size, type, and location of the tumour, multiple treatment sessions may be required.
