General anaesthesia is required for most surgical procedures. In addition to planned procedures, our technical facilities and experienced staff also enable us to perform surgery in acute emergencies. Prior to surgery all horses undergo a thorough general clinical examination to assess their suitability for the procedure under general anaesthesia.
Medications for sedation and induction of general anaesthesia are administered via a central venous access. Our surgical team then assists the horse into a controlled lying position. A crane is used to safely transport the horse to the operating table. After intubation, the horse is connected to a modern anaesthesia machine and ventilated using a respirator. Throughout the procedure, a comprehensive monitoring system continuously assesses cardiovascular function and respiratory gas values. Following surgery, the horse recovers in our padded recovery stable under close supervision by our experienced team. Depending on the type of procedure, pre-existing conditions and the horse´s age, the recovery phase may be supported by various assistance systems. Once the horse is able to stand and walk safely, it is carefully returned to its stable, where feeding is carefully reintroduced under close observation.
